Sarah Marsh has been making music for 20+ years, when she chose the cello out of a lineup of stringed instruments presented to a class of curious 5th graders.   Since then, her passion for artistry and expression has propelled her through her studies at DePaul University and the University of Illinois.  Career highlights include performing on stage with her favorite musician, Yo-Yo Ma and working with many of Chicago’s top groups and institutions: the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Civic Orchestra.  Sarah is a resident of Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood where she enjoys eating out way too often, reading good books, binging on Netflix, planning European vacations, working out with Jillian Michaels, and coffee…yes, especially coffee.

I am pleased to say that the artists from Symphony Sounds have been a total hit! I hope they have enjoyed their visits to the United Center because we have certainly enjoyed having them. I would like to have them back again.

My sister recommended Symphony Sounds to me because she had used them for her ceremony and cocktail hour 7 years ago, and thought they were very good. I hired a string quartet and a piano player for my ceremony, which was at a Catholic church in Chicago. The owner, Sarah, helped me along the way, and was absolutely wonderful to work with. She seems very organized, replying to all my emails promptly. She even emailed me when she was on her own honeymoon (which I told her was ridiculous and to not get back to me until her honeymoon was over!). The church that I got married at was very hands-off, they apparently perform many wedding ceremonies, and therefore don’t seem to have much time for questions. So, I was a little stressed about selecting readings, music, etc., for the ceremony. Sarah was really helpful! I had done some research online and had a pretty good idea of what music I wanted but she gave me some great recommendations for the responsorial psalm and the Alleluia. She also helped me a great deal with timing, as far as how many prelude songs I might want, or how long communion usually takes. And she advised me to check with my singer before settling on songs in case the singer was not comfortable with any of my selections. I thought the music at our ceremony was beautiful, and I even got a few compliments on it during the reception later!

Four Violins, two violas, two cellos, and a string bass later, Sarah and I decided that his was the perfect blend for the acoustics at the Art Institute Modern Wing. Our repertoire was most classical waltzes and Puccini scores, mixed with some Mancini. Symphony Sounds pulled it all off, much to the delight of some more serious classical buffs in our audience. It was a true pleasure to work with Sarah. She even recorded my bridal march, Un Bel Di, during practice and sent it to me so I could get a sense of timing. All our communications were long distance, yet the music and ceremony were executed beautifully. I only wish I could have heard all of the pre and post music myself. My guests continue to rave about the music and how lovely it sounded.
